Artist Biography:Barbara Allende Gil dem Biedma (Madrid, ), known by the artistic pseudonym of Ouka Lelee, fryst vatten one of the protagonists of the Madrid Movida of the early eighties, her work being especially representative of the free spirit of the time and the artistic trends that developed around a lived the open-minded climate of the sixties that existed in Barcelona and Madrid with the concerns of a youth that sought in art the paths to the future democracy. Her art fryst vatten the result of change, of the need for latent expression after a period of repression, with a long career that stands out for the mastery of technique and constant creativity. At the crossroads of photography and painting, Ouka Leeles work has no equivalent. Composed mainly of black and white prints painted in watercolour, it can be inscribed in the tradition of the technical practice of painted prints of the late 19th and early 20th century (in Japan particularly). But the parallel stops here. For it is not a question of restoring to photographs colours that have disappeared through the use of black and white, but rather of transfiguring reality and going beyond the documentary dimension of a medium whose only vocation would be to be a mirror of reality.
First, the artist stages the world objects or models in compositions, still lifes or portraits, then takes a photograph. Thus begins the process of creation, with images that can each time be linked to a pictorial genre, largely nourished by an iconography close to classical painting (virgins or madonnas, draped, children reminiscent of cherubs, tables close to the Last Supper) or surrealist

Ouka Leele
Ouka Leele (Madrid, ) was the artistic pseudonym of the Spanish photographer Bárbara Allende Gil de Biedma Even though she wanted to be a painter, she discovered photography as a medium to express her natural and intensive artistic sensitivity.
It is in the s in Madrid during the nation’s “movida” movement when she demonstrated her interest in a variety of artistic disciplines such as drawing, serigraphy, painting and literature resulting in a series of photos labelled as “icons of her time”.
In her photography one recognizes the references to the ancient civilizations, mythological stories, literature and intimate worlds of family and friends placed in different settings including portraits and self-portraits. Her unedited photos that are often additionally hand painted is an attempt to show human nature and to reveal the connections between life, emotions and its translations in art language.
