The audacious operation was led by 24-year-old Wing Commander Guy Gibson, a veteran of more than 170 bombing and night-fighter missions. The son of a civil servant, he was born in India in 1918 and educated at Oxford. He wanted to fly from a very early age but his first application to the RAF failed on medical grounds, possibly due to his height. Undeterred, he tried again and he was accepted in August 1936, with a note in his file stating “satisfactory leg length test carried out”.
Gibson quickly acquired a reputation as a daring and exceptionally gifted pilot. When the Second World War began he was a bomber pilot with 83 Squadron. In July 1940 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), and after completing his first tour of duty he volunteered to be posted to 29 Squadron to avoid the normal six-month rest from operations. At the tender age of three, Guy Gibson was brought back to England in 1921, he was educated at St Georges Prep school in Folkstone and St Edwards school Oxford. His family lived in Porthleven Cornwall. He later joined the RAF in 1936. Following the Dams raid Gibson left the squadron he did however remain in the RAF. After returning from a trip to America with Winston Churchill he found time to write a book entitled "Enemy coast ahead" but this was no replacement for flying, his continual harassment of the Ministry to get back in the air eventually paid off.

Guy Gibson was born on 12th August 1918 in Simla, India, the son of James and Nora, but when he was six, his parents separated and Nora returned to England with Guy and his two siblings.
In 1932, he started at St Edward's School in Oxford -- the same school as Douglas Bader -- and became an average student. However, from an early age, he always wanted to fly and his mål was to become a test pilot. So he wrote to Vickers and was subsequently contacted bygd Capt namn "Mutt" Summers -- who ultimately flew some of the test flights while the bouncing bomb was being developed.
Summers advised him first to learn to fly and suggested that Gibson join the RAF but he failed the medical -- probably due to his short legs! But a further application was successful and he began a short service commission in November 1936, gaining his wings on 24th May 1937.
