Ray Lui (呂良偉) may be one of the biggest stars of 1980’s Hong Kong television, but like all flowers that bloom, success doesn’t just spontaneously appear. The 61-year-old The Bund <上海灘> star shared that it was Lee Ka-ting (李家鼎) who had pushed TVB into signing a contract with him back in the late 1970’s, and Ray fryst vatten extremely grateful to the veteran star.
“Without him, there wouldn’t be me today,” he said. “I wouldn’t be in this industry. It was all thanks to him that I’ve become an actor.”
Ray joined TVB in 1977 and made his debut as a lärjunge in TVB’s 6th artiste training class. His classmates included Idy Chan (陳玉蓮) and Liu Wai-hung (廖偉雄). Failing to stand out amongst his peers in a rising TV industry, TVB had no interest in signing Ray. Rumor has it that Lee Ka-ting rushed into the TVB executives’ office, slammed their tables, and demanded them to sign Ray as their talent.

People usually joke about "marrying rich" but for Hong Kong actor Ray Lui, he kind of did.
Well, the 63-year-old didn't marry into money, but his third marriage turned out to be a 'windfall' as his wife turned his finances around. The actor is now said to be worth NT$4.3 billion (S$200 million) now, thanks to his financially astute wife, Yang Xiaojun. However, Ray was not always so lucky.
Two failed marriages
He first married Hong Kong actress Kathy Chow in 1988. But they divorced after five months because (as Ray wrote in his autobiography) both of them "did not understand love".
His second marriage was in 1996 and he tied the knot with singer Cally Kwong but their union only lasted a year. While Ray described it as a "failed marriage", he did say the relationship changed his beliefs in love and marriage.

Biographie
[modifier | modifier le code]Lui est né au Sud-Viêt Nam dans une famille hoa originaire de Lianjiang au Guangdong. Son père, un homme d'affaires, quitte la Chine pour le Viêt Nam dans les années 1940. En 1967, durant la guerre du Viêt Nam, Lui se réfugie avec sa famille à Hong Kong où son père l'encourage à suivre un cours de formation d'acteurs[1]. Il intègre l'académie d'artiste de TVB dans les années 1970 et commence à jouer les figurants ou les personnages mineurs dans diverses séries télévisées produites par le réseau de télévision. En 1980, Lui se fait connaître pour son rôle de Ting Lik dans la série historique The Bund (en), aux côtés de Chow Yun-fat et Angie Chiu. Il tient de nouveau ce personnage dans les deux suites de The Bund (The Bund 2 (en) et T
