    Dionysios Solomos (; Greek: Διονύσιος Σολωμός[ˈsiossoloˈmos]; 8 April – 9 February ) was a Greek poet from Zakynthos, who is considered to be Greece's national poet. He is best known for writing the Hymn to Liberty (Greek: Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Ἐλευθερίαν, Ýmnos eis tīn Eleutherían), which was set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros and became the Greek and Cypriot national anthem in and respectively. He was the central figure of the Heptanese School of poetry. He is considered the national poet of Greece, not only because he wrote the national anthem, but also because he contributed to the preservation of earlier poetic tradition and highlighted its usefulness to modern literature. Other notable poems include Ὁ Κρητικός (The Cretan), Ἐλεύθεροι Πολιορκημένοι (The Free Besieged). A characteristic of his work is that no poem except the Hymn to Liberty was completed, and almost nothing was published during his lifetime.

    Dionysios Solomos was born in April in Zkynthos, the son of Angeliki Nikli and Count Nikolaos Solomos, who died in Dionysios began his education in Zakynthos. In , following the decision of his guardian, Count Dionysios Messalas, he was forced to complete his education in Italy, as was usual for young dock of noble blood of his time. In November , he enrolled in the lag School of the University of Padua, where among the professors were Vincenzo Monti, Ugo Foscolo, and Elia Giardini. He graduated two years later. In Italy, he came into contact with liberal europeisk movements, heard the demands for social renewal, and experienced dimensions of classicism and romanticism.

He finished high school in Cremona and in he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Pavia University.

    Solomos started writing poetry in Italian, as he was a fluent speaker of the language and had great knowledge of Italian literature. Soon he was liberally welcomed in Italian literary circles as a brilliant poet.
