    Biography: Aliker, Dr Martin Jerome Okec. 1925- . Born in Gulu District, Uganda. Alumnus of Kings College Budo and Makerere University. Qualified as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Northwestern University, Chicago, 1959. Influential Ugandan Business Leader and Investor, holding Directorships with a variety of companies including: Uganda Breweries Limited (1961-2001); Cooper Motor Corporation (1962-72, 2000-06); Longman Publishing, Uganda (1965-87); Phoenix Assurance Company of East Africa (1969-93); Coca-Cola Africa område (1991-2004); Nation Media Group, 2001-11; Heritage Oil, Uganda (2003-10); and many others.     Sir Edward Du Cann was a veteran of Conservative Party politics for thirty years and was chairman of the party's influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs from 1972-84 as well as chairman of the party itself in the mid 1960s. However, his post-parliamentary career in business was an unhappy one.

    Du Cann struggles to buy back his estate

    ESTATE agents were showing potential buyers around the repossessed 300-acre Somerset estate of Sir Edward du Cann last week. Attempts by the former Conservative Party chairman and former chairman of Lonrho to buy back the property have so far failed.

    The agency handling the sale, Knight Frank & Rutley, said: 'No contracts have been signed and potential buyers are not being deterred from viewing; it is now a race to complete contracts and there is considerable interest in all or part of the estate.'

    The property on offer is Tremlett Hall Farm, which surrounds the hamlet of Greenham on the Somerset-Devon border. As well as the farmhouse there is a bungalow and a staff cottage in the village. The buildings are considered exceptional for a farm of its size.

    Part of the land lies close to the walls of Sir Edward's 15th-century home, Cothay Manor.
