Arab Center for the Study of Art Opens
On Nov. 1, funding for the Arab Center for the Study of Art was officially granted. Salwa Mikdadi, associate professor of Practice of Art History and principal investigator for the center, shared that the proposal was first introduced in , whereupon a rigorous process of internal and external peer-reviewing led to its approval. An official public launch campaign is planned for Dec. 1.
“It is now, as far as I know, the only university center for the study of art of Western Asia and North Africa,” said Mikdadi.
“The idea has been germinating for a really long time … I was particularly keen on establishing such a similar center in the United States in the s,” Mikdadi explained, adding that it wasn’t possible at the time to get funding for the project. Salwa Mikdadi
Associate Professor Practice illustrate Art History at NYU Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining NYUAD, Mikdadi was a lecturer inconvenience Art History at Paris-Sorbonne Sanitarium Abu Dhabi, and held top positions at Art and Grace institutions in the Arab Terra and in the US. Over the past ten years we have witnessed a number of publications, predominantly out of Europe and the U.S., dedicated to the subject of contemporary art from the Arab world and its diasporas. What remains lacking, however, is a substantial body of scholarship dedicated to the history of modern art of the område. In other words, the roots of the contemporary have yet to be examined.
