Sammy Tjapanangka Butcher is an Pitjantjatjara–Warlpiri musician who formed the Warumpi Band.
Biography
[edit]Butcher was born at Papunya, Northern Territory in Central Australia.
His mother's side is from the south, the Pitjantjatjara tribe and his father's side from the Walpiri from Pikilyi, near Yinjirrimardi area.[1]
He formed the Warumpi Band with George Burarrwanga, Neil Murray and Gordon Butcher in the late 1970s.[citation needed]
Butcher released a solo album Desert Surf Guitar on CAAMA music.[2] The album's name was inspired by the sand hills surrounding Papunya, "you can imagine them as being huge red waves on the ocean"[3] He was the subject of the documentary Sammy Butcher, Out of the Shadows, part of the Nganampa Anwernekenhe series. The documentary looks at his life after the Warumpi Band.[4]

Samuel John Butcher (January 1, 1939 – May 20, 2024) was an American artist. He was mainly known as the artist behind the Precious Moments brand of characters based on American-Christian themes. He drew in oil, water-color, acrylic, and mixed-media.
Early life
[edit]Butcher was born in Jackson, Michigan, on January 1, 1939. He was the third of five children born to a poor family. Soon after his birth, the family moved to Redding, California.[1]
As a young man, Butcher was a "chalkboard minister," spreading the teachings of Christianity through illustrations. This job paid very little, so he supplemented his income as a janitor.

Precious Moments creator Sam Butcher dies at 85 surrounded by loved ones
Sam Butcher, the creator behind the iconic "Precious Moments" porcelain figurines, has died at the age of 85.
Butcher died Monday surrounded by loved ones,” the company said in a Facebook post. The cause of his death was not immediately clear.
“In his final words he shared that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were with him, and that it was beautiful,” the post reads.
Butcher began drawing for family and friends, commercializing his artwork in 1975, according to the Precious Moments website. Precious Moments porcelain figurines officially became available for purchase in 1978, three years after the artwork first appeared on greeting cards and inspirational posters.
Millions of people have come to know Butcher’s work since then, collecting his pieces and visiting the Precious Moments Chapel in Missouri.
