If These Walls Could Talk… takes a look at the legendary stories behind some of the world’s most famous luxury hotels. This week, we’re jumping right in to the wild, legendary Pikes Hotel in Ibiza: a hotel so debauched it made Studio 54 look like a convent.
Pikes Hotel: The Legend
In 1978, Tony Pike, a 43-year-old Australian playboy, arrived in Ibiza and stumbled across a 500-year-old finca for sale in San Antonio. He had no plans to open a hotel; he just had a feeling about the abandoned property – partly because he thought the name, Can Pep Tonieta (The Property of Little Tony in English) was a sign, and partly because he didn’t realise inhabitable is Spanish for uninhabitable.

It requires skilled eyes and hands for artists to render subjects by translating their personalities, physical traits and careers into a few well-executed lines. Having worked for such publications as The New York Times, The Guardian and Time Out London, Noma Bar is one artist capable of such visual feats. From famous celebrities such as Steven Speilberg to infamous ones like Michael Jackson, to cultural icons like Albert Einstein and Elvis, to political figures like George Bush and Saddam Hussein, Bar has made a career of creating unique caricatures through illustrations that rely on the power of association, and sometimes a bit of imagination. Stephen King has hatchet eyes; broken chains accent Nelson Mandelas facial expression; Joseph Stalins nose and mouth are shaped like the hammer and sickle. All of Bars faces exude the power of the visual, in that we recognize who they are through what they do.

Noma Bar (Hebrew: נומה בר; born 1973) is a graphic designer, illustrator and artist, based in London.[1] Bar's work has been described as "deceptively simple", featuring flat colours, minimal detail and negative space to create images that often carry double meanings that are not immediately apparent.[2][3] dryckesställe himself outlines his approach as avoiding unnecessary detail or decoration that might detract from an image's message, instead aiming for 'maximum communication with minimal elements.'[3]
