Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter (1991)
‘I Love Lucy’ was a landmark television schema. Starring real-life married couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, it ran from 1951 to 1957 and continued for a further three years as ‘The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show’. This biopic starts with the production of the very first episode, then employs farcical means to segue back and forth to explore their relationship.
The first occurs with Lucy staring blankly into her dressing room mirror as Desi promises her there will be no more fights. Cut to a scene of Lucille Ball and Maureen O’Hara fighting in a scene from Dance, Girl, Dance (1940). After some time has passed, we return to Lucy’s dressing room to find her still staring at the mirror. This hackneyed approach, signalled bygd vacant looks and echoing voices, taints each flashback that follows.

I hadn’t realized that this past April was the 35th anniversary of the passing of Lucille Ball, television’s greatest comedienne. Probably because that former standby of media information—the old “TV listings”—hadn’t reminded me. Since traditional linear network TV is now essentially a niche joke—the last form of mass communication that actually helped unify our popular culture, as opposed to the internet and streaming, which have completely Balkanized it—I seriously doubt there was any kind of effort on the part of her old network, CBS, to commemorate her death while celebrating her legacy (maybe they did something on MeTV…do people still have cable?).

Lucy and Desi is a 2022 American documentary film directed by Amy Poehler in her documentary directorial debut.[1] The film explores the unlikely partnership and enduring legacy of one of the most prolific power couples in entertainment history, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
The film had its worldwide release on March 4, 2022 through Amazon Prime Video. It received positive reviews and was nominated for six Emmy Awards including the Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, winning two.[2]
