  • Geissler developed for the exhausting process a new mercury vacuum pump which he presented in September at the University of Bonn. With this pump he was able to reach very low pressure levels. These low pressure levels played a very important role in the discovery of cathode rays, canal rays and X-rays in the years that followed. Geissler was not only the maker of the tubes but did also the preparations and research on this new light phenomena. The high tension needed to discharge the tubes came from a Ruhmkorff coil, also a new developed instrument those days by Dani&#;l Ruhmkorff in This instrument produced a reliable high voltage, in contrast to the static machines, which good working depended on a low air humidity. In Geissler demonstrated his tubes and vacuum pump for public.

    Heinrich Geissler () adalah seorang ahli mesin, ahli fisika, dan peniup kaca berkebangsaan Jerman.[1] Ia dilaihirkan di kota Ingelshieb, German.[2] Ayahnya adalah seorang pengrajin kaca.[2] Ia memulai bengkel kerjanya di Bonn pada tahun , pada tahun yang sama pula, Geissler bertemu dengan rekan kerjanya, Julius Plücker, seorang ahli matematika dan fisika.[2] Bersama dengan Plucker, Geissler mengerjakan termometer dan tube kapiler.[2]

    &#;GEISSLER, HEINRICH (–), German physicist, was born at the village of Igelshieb in Saxe-Meiningen on the 26th of May and was educated as a glass-blower. In he settled at Bonn, where he speedily gained a high reputation for his skill and ingenuity of conception in the fabrication of chemical and physical apparatus. With Julius Plücker, in , he ascertained the maximum density of water to be at 3·8°&#;C. He also determined the coefficient of expansion for ice between −24° and −7°, and for water freezing at 0°. In , in conjunction with H.&#;P.&#;J. Vogelsang, he proved the existence of liquid carbon dioxide in cavities in quartz and topaz, and later he obtained amorphous from ordinary phosphorus by means of the electric current. He is best known as the inventor of the sealed glass tubes which bear his name, by means of which are exhibited the phenomena accompanying the discharge of electricity through highly rarefied vapours and gases.
